Floored

Haven’t posted anything in some time. Last weekend I was busy with gallery night, which went well. Also had a surprise baby shower. More on that later.

This weekend was all about the hardwood flooring. Having never installed hardwood floor I literally did not know what I was getting myself into. 12 hours and many sore muscles later this is the results.

Hardwood one Hardwood three

Hardwood four Hardwood two

A hundred square feet never felt so large!

The Name Game, part 7

As promised here is the baby’s name:

We’ve decided on the name Ania Morgan Sarnowski

For those scoring at home the name is pronounced AHN-yah.

ANIA

Gender: Feminine

Usage: Polish, Russian

Other Scripts: Аня (Russian)

Pronounced: AHN-yah (Polish) Now, some people have asked why we don’t spell it Anya. Well, that’s the Russian version and we’d prefer to stick with the Polish form.

The Name Game, part 6

Aunt Jane solved the mystery of the middle name. It’s Morgan!

I’ve filled in the middle name as well as the last name.

I’m still not going to fill in the first name, but I’ll give you a hint. The missing letters in the first name are already on the board.

Tomorrow I’ll post the first name?

Any guess?

More Veggies

I found this great set of vegetable shaped rattles at A Toy Garden.  This is another wonderful site I’ve come across with unique toys, many of them made here in the USofA.

Many of the products on the site are durable wooden toys. They look antique compared to the electronic toys of today, but frankly I’m sick of every damn toy under the sun needing batteries.

Veggie Baby

Sometimes I wonder if we shouldn’t raise a vegetarian baby.

I seem to be getting closer and closer to being one myself. A vegetarian that is, not a baby.

I only eat meat when we are out at a restaurant and usually it is beef. I’ve all but lost my taste for pork and chicken only sounds good to when it’s fried and served with mashed potatoes and greens. I’ve given up most dairy foods due to allergies, not with lactose itself, I just sneeze and wheeze less when I’m not eating dairy. As for fish and eggs, I just can’t see giving either up. I have gone long portions of my life not eating eggs. I just lose the taste for them. Right now is not one of those times. But fish, I can’t give fish up, at least not sushi. Cooked fish doesn’t always tempt my tastebuds, but sashimi, that’s heaven.

The reason I’m thinking of raising a veggie kid is that we send kids such conflicting messages about animals. Books and movies teach them that animals are these great, beautiful creatures meant to be loved. Then, we serve hamburgers for dinner. Farm raised kids may have an advantage as they get to see the whole cycle of a cows life, but suburban and city kids get spared all the gorey details. There’s something wrong in that.

Still, to raise a veggie kid, even in today’s society, is to raise a fruit. It’s hard to explain to a kid why everyone else gets is eating burgers, hot dogs, etc and they have to eat tofudogs or salad. At the same time, maybe a vegetarian child is getting more fruits and vegetables, something most American kids need.

Daddy’s Tools

With all the home remodeling going on, in preparation for Oodie Doodie’s arrival, I decided it was time to invest in some tools.

Buying tools, like knowing you’ve conceived a child, is a real shot of testosterone. It makes you feel proud to be a man.

I never saw myself as being the sort of guy to go ga-ga over tools, but now that I’m older the notion has grown more appealing. The idea of stocking a garage full of tools grows even more interesting when I think ahead to the future, to birthdays, Christmases, and Father’s Days to come. I don’t want to get stuck receiving a bunch of ties I’ll never wear. No, I’d rather get a new ratchet set or a planer.

Sure, I’ll always want to get more DVD’s – movie collecting is still my number one hobby, but now I can build shelves and storage units for my movies. That is unless I cut my thumbs off. Jen is quick to remind me of a co-worker of her’s who brought home her new baby. That same day, the woman’s husband sawed his thumb off.

Mas Mia Putia

Is a tock louder than a tick?

Even if it isn’t, Jen and I both hear the clock racing towards our due date and we are wondering if the list of needed baby supplies will ever be empty. Thankfully, we have Mia Putia in town to help us out.

I just can’t stop raving about how great this store is and how nice Zebedee has been to us. He patiently answers all out cloth diaper questions. He also helped us set up a gift registry at the store and online. You just have to go to the Mia Putia website and click on the “gift registry” link in the blue bar at the top of the page. Scroll down a bit and you’ll see Jen and I’s list of desired items.

We aren’t expecting everyone to shop from Mia Putia. It’s mostly for those intown folks who may want to get us something as well as support a local business. Out of towners can call in and place an order or order something online.

For shit’s sake, can you guess are #1 most wanted item?

Oh Boy, Toys!

We haven’t talked much around here about every kids favorite thing – TOYS!

The reason for the silence is due to the fact that most kids toys don’t get spring the jack in my box. Not to sound like some scrooge or grinch, but a lot of modern toys are either tied into a movie, television show, or video game. They leave little room for imagination.

The one toy line I’ve always been enamored with is Sanrio – the makers of Hello Kitty – but I’ll talk more about that in another post. For now, I’ll simply say that what catches my eye is design. Perhaps that’s why I went gaga for Oompa Toys. It’s a site for European wooden and baby toys. I just started to dive into the site and I am already overwhelmed. I promised not to spoil this kid, but after seeing this site the only thing holding me back is my budget.

For now, I’ve started a wishlist. The first thing on it was the cat pictured above. It reminds me of our little orange cat, Busy. I’m sure between now and when Oodie arrives I’ll have stockpiled the wishlist with enough things to last her three or four birthdays and Christmases.
